Amaechi: I Shunned Nigeria’s Centenary To Pay Back Jonathan

RIVERS State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has said that he stayed away from the Nigeria’s centenary in Abuja in order to get even with President Goodluck Jonathan whom he said failed ...to honour the invitation to 100 years anniversary of Port Harcourt last year.

The governor explained that even when prominent indigenes of the state visited the President in Abuja and invited him to the 2013 event in Port Harcourt, he refused to be at the occasion.

Amaechi, who spoke at a book presentation to mark the 70th birthday of the former Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Nimi Briggs, on Saturday, explained that he had expected Jonathan to honour the invitation from the state.

He said, “When they ask me why I did not attend the celebration, I said five prominent Rivers men left here to go and invite the President. When they approached me that they wanted to go and invite the President, I said, ‘don’t bother your head, the President won’t come.’

“They said ‘no, not after he had seen us.’ They (Rivers indigenes) are seated hear, Justice Karibi Whyte, Prof Tekena Tamuno, Prof E.J. Alagwa, Chief Agbaru and Prof. Nimi Briggs; and they went. They were very well received by our President and they were very impressed.

“They came back to my house that day in Abuja and they told me that they met with the President and I was excited. Everybody in the Federal Government told me the President would come (for the Port Harcourt centenary). The President did not come.

“So, I told them that I would not go to (Nigeria’s) centenary because Port Harcourt turned 100 and the President refused to come even though he grew up here. I said I would not go to Nigeria’s Centenary in response to his (Jonathan) refusal to come for Port Harcourt Centenary.

“I did that not because I wanted to disrespect the President. I respect him for his age and his achievement in the society. I thought that the Federal Government should have respected and honoured that invitation,” Amaechi said.

On the political crisis in the state, the governor said the only way the problem could come to an end was for the state to benefit from Federal Government projects.

He acknowledged the presence of some elders in the state that could make him move from the All Progressives Congress back to the Peoples Democratic Party, but added that such elders had not been convinced on the need for him to leave the APC.

He said, “They asked me, how would you end this crisis? I say with me, it will be difficult to end because I stand forward to look at Rivers State. I said the only way to end it is to change the face of Rivers State. If Rivers people get better things, I will change.

“Then I put a caveat; I said there are some old men here who can make me move from APC to PDP because they will never tell me to move to PDP if they are not convinced that it is the right thing to do. This means you can’t influence them with anything rather than what is right for Rivers State and Nigeria.

“They are here; they know themselves and they have been part of the struggle in a very quiet manner and they support me. My prayer is that God will continue to bless all of you.”

YOBE MASSACRE: How My Mates Were Killed – Survivor

DAMATURU—“I was shot on my left leg, while I was sleeping.
When I woke up, I could not walk and was later taken to the
girls hostel where the insurgents gathered us with the female
students. They selected some of the female students and
went away with them, while they left some of us groaning in
pain from gun shot”.
Those were the words of 14-year-old Ibrahim Musa Lampo, a
JSS 2 student of Federal Government College, FGC, Bunu Yadi,
Yobe State who was one of the lucky survivors of the Boko
Haram massacre on Tuesday, which claimed the lives of 43
students. The insurgents also burnt the hostels, classrooms
and more than 40 houses during the attack.
Ibrahim who recounted his experience while groaning in pains
was receiving treatment for gunshot injuries at the General
Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu.
His mother, Hajiya Hauwa Lampo, who was sitting beside him
on the hospital bed lamented the inability of government to
protect the lives of the innocent students. The mother
passionately appealed to the Federal Government to “provide
adequate security for all unity schools in Nigeria, particularly
in the north eastern region of the country by constructing a
fence that will shield the students from intruders. And if the
government can not deploy adequate security personnel, they
should despatch sniffer dogs into the schools to patrol every
nook and corner and this will go a long way in curbing the
insurgency.”
Ibrahim’s father, Mallam Musa Lampo, an immigration officer
was still in shock over the incident and simply said: “I have
committed everything into the hands of God.”
Boko Haram attacks
Thousands of Nigerians from the troubled North eastern states
are fleeing into Niger Republic as the Boko Haram attacks
heightens fears in the region.
A source in the North-East, yesterday, said tens of thousands
of people have gone to Niger Republic to escape a wave of
attacks and bombings by Islamist sect Boko Haram, which is
fighting to carve out an Islamic country from the northern
states.
The government in Niamey has granted them refugee status,
but United Nations workers say it has also banned the
construction of formal camps, fearing any structures could
encourage an even bigger influx — or even bring fighters over
the border.
“We’re living on the charity and hospitality of locals and aid
organizations,” said 28-year-old Umara. “It’s difficult to feed
my family. We eat once a day, twice at best.”
A spokesman for Niger’s Interior Ministry was not
immediately available for comment. But Hassane Ardo Ido,
General-Secretary of Diffa province, said authorities feared
militants might infiltrate the camps and use them as bases.
“We are trying to handle the situation and stop any act that
could hurt our security,” he said.
The United Nations High Commission for Refugees, UNHCR,
country representative in Niger, Karl Steinacker, said Niamey
was particularly worried because most of the refugees came
from the Kanuri ethnic group, a stronghold of Boko Haram.
“The authorities are worried the Nigerian insurgency might
spill over into Niger,” he said.
Meanwhile, condemnations have continued to trail the
massacre of the students.
Perpetrators should be swiftly brought to justice —UN Scribe
United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon in a statement
issued, yesterday, in New York, strongly condemned the brutal
killing of students in Yobe. He expressed “sincere
condolences to the bereaved families and hoped that the
perpetrators would be “swiftly brought to justice”.
It’s declaration of war—Mark
Senate President, David Mark in his reaction described last
Tuesday’s slaughter of over 40 students by Boko Haram
insurgents as an open declaration of war on Nigerians.
Senator Mark who condemned the killing in a statement
issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Paul Mumeh said that the
insurgents had no justification to kill students who neither
offended them nor committed any crime, saying “even in war
situations, children and women were always spared.”
The Senate President said: “This open declaration of war on
everybody especially defenceless students cannot be
justified. This is inhuman, it is animalistic and barbaric. It is
unthinkable that this is happening in Nigeria. It is also curious
that under an emergency rule when security operatives should
be on red alert, this mayhem still persists. Honestly, this calls
for soul searching and I believe the security authorities must
rise to this challenge.”
Killings wicked, horrendous —Tambuwal
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri
Tambuwal, also described the killings as ignoble, wicked and
horrendous. In a statement issued in Abuja by his Special
Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Malam Imam Imam,
Tambuwal tasked security agencies to redouble their efforts
and change their tactics, especially now that those engaged in
the killings had increased their attacks on softer targets. He
said the only way to console the families of the victims and
Nigerians was to fish out perpetrators of the dastardly act and
bring them to justice.
Sultan condemns Yobe killings
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Saad Abubakar condemned the
killing, saying it was a senseless killing perpetrated by
criminals. “The barbaric and heinous attack is utterly
condemnable in its totality,” the Sultan said.
He recalled similar attacks in the past and called on the
Federal Government to wake up to its responsibility of
protecting lives and property of Nigerians, especially the
North East.
“Human lives are sacred and must be treated as so,” he said.
Killings extremely shocking — PDP
National leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on
its part described as extremely shocking the massacre of the
students of Federal Government College, Bunu in Yadi, Yobe.
In a statement, yesterday, PDP National Publicity Secretary,
Chief Olisa Metuh, said that as a party, it has been grief-
stricken since it received the news of the gruesome killing of
the students.
Metuh who described the attack and killing of the harmless
students as “monstrous and extremely shocking, said, “The
massacre of these harmless students cannot be justified
under any guise.”
President should visit Yobe State —APC
The All Progressives Congress (APC) on its part unreservedly
condemned the horrific attack on the Federal Government
College in Yobe state.
In a statement issued in Lagos yesterday by its Interim
National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party
said the attacks, which were extremely gory even by the
scorched-earth tactics of the terrorists, plumbs the depth of
horror.”
APC called on President Jonathan to immediately visit the
state to offer succour to the families of the victims and the
state government.
Senate asks COAS to relocate to Maiduguri
The Senate on Wednesday directed the Chief of Army Staff,
COAS, Lt-Gen. Kenneth Minimah to relocate his office to the
7th Division in Maiduguri and take urgent and appropriate
steps to quell the killings by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram in
Borno and other states in the North East.
The Senator George Sekibo-led Senate Committee on Defence
and Army which said it regretted the Yobe slaughter advised
the COAS to re-strategize on possible new ways of curbing
the excesses of the terrorist group and also mobilise all
available military resources and face the insurgents.
The Committee said, “We heard of your planned relocation to
Maiduguri, we hereby as the Committee overseeing your
activities, direct that your office relocate temporarily to the
7th Division in Maiduguri and that you take urgent and
appropriate steps to quell the situation.
“From today, all schools and health institutions should be
provided with special security, as we do not want a repeat of
these killings of our innocent citizens.
Clerics condemn attack
Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN in the
North East, Rev. Shuaibu M. Byal, called on President
Jonathan to do something decisive to arrest the current
madness, asking “or how many more innocent persons must
be killed before the government comes to our aid?
In a similar development, the Prelate Methodist Church
Nigeria, His Eminence Samuel Uche also expressed great
shock and sadness over the gruesome attacks by gunmen
suspected to be Boko Haram sect members.

The Reason Sanusi Was Sacked

**Sanusi claimed a whooping N1.257 Billion for “Lunch For
his Police guards” and expenses for “Private Guards” In
2012.
**Bogus Payments To Non-operating and non-existing
Airlines To Distribute Currency Nationwide Exposed.
**Operated Bogus Expense Heads To Hide Fraudulent
Activities.
**CBN Has Held An Account With A Balance Of N1.423
Billion For An Unknown Customer Since 2008.
Following Thursday’s suspension of Mr. Sanusi Lamido
Sanusi as Governor of the Central Bank by President
Goodluck Jonathan, 247Nigerianinfo has exclusively obtained a
copy of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria report that
ripped apart the 2012 audited financial statement of the apex
bank and exposed the fraud, excesses and wastefulness of
Sanusi and the CBN.
Sanusi had over the years projected an image of an anti-graft
banker, activist, reformer and crusader against graft and
waste in government, as well as the financial sector. Weeks
before his ouster as CBN Governor, Mr. Sanusi had accused
the NNPC of failing to remit billions of dollars in oil revenue
to the federation account, a claim which the NNPC has
continued to dispute.
The 13-page Council report emanated following Sanusi’s
response to a query issued him in early 2013 by President
Goodluck Jonathan over the apex bank’s alarming reckless
donations nationwide and its finances.
Whilst describing Sanusi’s response to the President’s query
as “a clear display of incompetence, nonchalance, fraud,
wastefulness, abuse of due process and deliberate efforts to
misrepresent facts…”, the Council accused the suspended
banker of several violations including but not limited to
carrying out activities with financial implications that are not
related to the CBN’s mandate, especially billions of naira in
ambiguous payments to invoices referred to as “Centre of
Excellence” and “Contribution to Internal National Security”,
and the CBN’s claim that it paid N38.233 billion to the
Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Company Plc in 2011
for the “printing of bank notes” whereas the turnover of the
entire printing and minting company group is N29.370
billion.

The Council also accused Sanusi of rogue payments as air
charter fees to Emirates Airways (N0.511b), Associated
Airline (N1.025b) and Wing Airline (N0.425b), for the
distribution of currency nationwide whereas Emirates does
not operate local charter flights within Nigeria, Wing Air is
unregistered in Nigeria with the Nigeria Civil Aviation
Authority (NCAA), and Associated Airlines did not have a
billion naira turnover in 2011 and have no financial
statements because the company said it had not had any
significant operation in two years to warrant preparing a
financial statement.

In lieu of the serious misconduct found against Sanusi and
the leadership of the CBN, the Council urged the President to
exercise the powers conferred on him by “Section 11 (2) (f) of
the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007 or invoke Section 11 (2)
(c) of the said Act and cause the Governor and the Deputy
Governors to cease from holding office in the CBN and also
direct the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria to carry out
a full investigation of the activities of the CBN…”

It is a shame that a very Corrupt Sanusi Lamido after getting
copy of this Report in June, 2013, started to sabotage and
blackmail the government by writing his bogus letter to the
President in September, 2013 claiming that NNPC did not
remit the sum of $49.8 billion, a figure he later apologized
that he did not calculate properly.

APC: Fantastic future or fatality?

The events preceding and culminating in the formation or amalgamation (some do not want the use of the latter) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are interesting as well as intriguing to an inquiring and analytical mind. While there is the need for Nigeria’s fledgling democracy to have a strong opposition to curtail and checkmate the excesses and seeming impunity of the ruling party at the centre, the coming together of parties: ACN, ANPP, CPC and a faction of APGA to form the APC was unexpected by many Nigerians. Much more so, the speed and timing of its formation caught many napping, especially in the ruling party. It was the thought of many political pundits and analysts that leaders of these erstwhile parties in the ally will truncate the process because of their ambitions. However, it is worth commending that the leaders involved in the merger put their act together against skeptics to initiate the formation of the APC.

Looking at the whole scenario with another lens, some opinionated that the merger is the coming together of strange bed fellows which may soon develop fractures and be fragmented into different political parties before the next general elections in 2015. In fact, to talk of the amassing of human resources, the APC currently boasts of many erudite as well as exposed, equipped and enlightened minds criss-crossing the Nigerian landscape. This is one crux of the matter. The writer, as an organisation leadership researcher, will want to analyse the present and future while not losing a vital gaze of the pedigree of the dramatis personae involved in the merger process. The top leaders definitely have more work to do to convince many Nigerians that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not the same as the APC, as some are already insinuating, especially with defections from the new PDP to the APC. The loss of five governors from the PDP to APC has really caused nightmarish insomnia for the ruling party at the centre, especially with the recalcitrant, albeit immature, attitude of the leaders of the Senate to let go of defecting Senators from the PDP to APC as the issue has been taken to court.

Inculcating the four I’s

It is the opinion of this writer that for APC to have a sustainable and desirable future envisaged by the founding fathers, it is high time the leaders, given consideration to broad-based consultation with the followers (members of the party at all levels), began to initiate a process of inculcating the four I’s: Identity, Ideology, Induction and Institutionalisation. The time is short. However, with a sagacious strategic leader like Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the fold and with other cerebral minds, a lot of ground can still be covered in a few months with a dint of hard work.

Identity

It is not only a good development but a farsighted one that the APC initiated a process of party membership registration throughout all the wards, local government areas, and states of the federation. As at the time of writing this article, the registration is still on-going. It was indeed a formal way of real members identifying with the party irrespective of their social status. However, to identify with any group, some factors come into play like who are the members of the group, or cherished norms of the group or objectives of the group, etc. Hitherto, the broom is the most popular of the emblems representing the APC as a party largely taken from the erstwhile ACN logo. It is a slogan of the then ACN that the intention of the party was to sweep away the epileptic and inefficient government of the PDP. However, especially with defectors in droves from the PDP to APC, this is the moment for the APC to bear a unique identity that will make and mark them distinctively different from the PDP. For instance, I remember, in Singapore, the ruling party, People’s Action Party (PAP), has a unique identification of wearing white as the party uniform to denounce and exhibit zero tolerance for corruption at all levels in the polity. This is a form of identity that is unique and catchy. The APC will need to do more that flashing or wielding the broom to convince Nigeria that the party is here to herald the real change yearned or longed for by the citizens.

Ideology

From the Merriam-Webster Dictionary Online, ideology can be defined as “the set of ideas and beliefs of a group or political party.” Alternatively, it is seen as “a manner or the content of thinking characteristic of an individual, group, or culture.” In essence, there is the urgent imperativeness for the top leaders in conjunction and consultation with members to define and depict in clear cut manner the real, pragmatic and all-embracing ideas, beliefs and line of thought unique to the APC as a political party that all members know, understand and can exploit to woo others into the fold. For instance, for those of us alive in the Second Republic, the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) under the leadership of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, had the four cardinal programmes: Free Education, Free Medical Services, Gainful Employment and Integrated Rural Development. These were once acknowledged by the then UK Government of Harold Wilson administration. Recently, Senator Olusola Saraki came out with some hastily and hurriedly crafted programmes for the APC. For the APC to have a sustainable future and avoid fatality at an early stage, it is imperative for the top leaders to constitute a cerebral and level-headed committee to fashion out a robust and realistic ideology that is sellable to Nigerians in all the six geopolitical zones not just within APC members if the party will want to win at the centre not only in 2015 but to sustain the winning streak like the People’s Action Party (PAP) in Singapore and the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in Malaysia.

Induction

While it is worth commending for members to register, it is much more vital for the APC to properly induct its members. In essence, inducting members will be a formal process of making someone a proper member of the party. The process in modern day organisations is to set aside weeks of capacity building for new employees for them to know, imbibe and internalise core values and culture of their organisations so that the new inductees will function in accord or harmony with old hands without friction thus ensuring and engendering organisational effectiveness. The APC needs this more than any other party now if the leaders desire right attitudinal approach, discipline and healthy organic growth. To this end, the APC, in these days of digital technology, can latch onto online platform to educate, enlighten and equip members at all levels. It is also essential to organise at local government, state or federal level leadership and followership training programmes such as seminars, workshop and conference inculcating the party’s ideology, constitution, history, partisan politics in Nigeria, theory and practice of social inclusion, religious and social harmony, servant leadership, exemplary and courageous followership, etc.

Institutionalisation

The last but not the least is institutionalisation. It is instructive to point out that after proper means of identification; carving or crafting a befitting ideology; imbibing or internalising core values and culture of the party through well thought out and tailor-made capacity building, the top leaders should envisage a way of building the APC to becoming a national institution that is colossus in status just like UMNO is in Malaysia. For instance, it is impossible for anyone entering Kuala Lumpur, the capital city, not to notice the presence of the ruling party in the Central Business District (CBD) with the UMNO building hosting the party secretariat and providing spaces for other corporate organisations to do their businesses. No doubt in Malaysia, the UMNO has passed the stage of just being a ruling political party to an institution. The APC can strategically think and tinker in a creative process towards becoming a notable and noticeable institution within our clime. I am yet to see one political party from independence till date exhibiting any trait of an institution within Nigeria’s polity. The pervading and prevailing attitude has largely been to grab power and share our common wealth. In line with this line of thought, the APC should begin to head hunt internally for cerebral minds to craft a well robust, sustainable, practicable, adaptable and amenable Strategic Change Plan (SCP) covering a period of five to ten years if the party intends to foist feasible change that is peaceful, proactive, passionate and progressive on the psyche of the Nigerian nation.

Conclusion

The APC has a golden opportunity to make a real change through servant-leading that can result in real transformational changes that are all-encompassing. Followers all over the nooks and crannies of Nigeria and also Nigerians in the Diaspora are watching and waiting to see if they will ever witness a paradigm shift from this mess of cantankerous corruption ravaging the soul of the Nigerian nation to an egalitarian society where poverty will be alleviated. May this golden opportunity not be marred by sheer greed, blind ambition, ethnic jingoism, religious bigotry, rivalry, etc. The leaders must roll up their sleeves to work assiduously, optimising the avalanche of resources within the party. The top leaders should continually demand and value genuine feedback from followers. This should be imputed into the decision-making process of the party. Issues such as conduct of primaries, internal democracy within the party, discipline, nomination, etc should be clearly spelt out in the party’s constitution.

Soldier kills man relaxing with lover in Osun community

Valentine’s Day enjoyment ended on a tragic note for a middle-aged man who was shot dead last Friday evening by an unidentified soldier in Ede, Osun State. The deceased whose identity could not be ascertained as at press time was said to be relaxing with his lover at a cool spot close to the palace of the Timi of Ede at the market square in Ede about 8.00pm when he was gunned down.

Although details of his killing were sketchy, it was learnt that the soldier allegedly trailed the deceased to the location where he was relaxing and shot him dead.

A source in Ede hinted that the soldier who allegedly shot the deceased could have mistaken him for another person as he stated that there was no circumstance that could have warranted his killing at the spot.

The incident sparked tension in the town with some youths reportedly attempting to lead a protest march to the Army Engineering Construction Regiment, Military Barracks, Ede but were later dissuaded by their kinsmen. The incident had been reported at the Ede Police Division.

Arogant and ungrateful, Amaechi cals Wike

The Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi, has again hit the Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike, describing him as arrogant and ungrateful.

Amaechi stated this yesterday, at the thanksgiving service held in honour of the Senator representing Rivers South East Senatorial District, Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, in Bera, Gokana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

He said the minister was arrogant to claim that he (Wike) made him (Amaechi) governor, pointing out that the Education Minister was among the political “friends” he helped.

Governor Amaechi revealed that Wike used the names of his children to swear that he would not betray him, saying that he lacked political relevance in the state.

The governor told the congregation that a notable cleric earlier prophesied to him not to nominate Wike as minister, that he would betray him at last.

“Nyesom Wike is a junior, junior boy. He is arrogant before the governor, by saying that he made me governor. I told you that I fasted for 10 months. Nyesom Wike is suffering from inability to show gratitude.

“I believe in prophecies. Apostle Suleiman said I should not nominate Nyesom Wike as a minister; that he would not only betray me, but would try to destroy me.

“Wike swore with the names of his children before Chuma. People, who do not have character, you don’t give them political power. Nyesom Wike, Dakuku Peterside and Magnus Abe are among those I helped that passed through our friendship,” Amaechi said, disclosing that during his tenure as Rivers State Assembly Speaker, he made Wike who was a council chairman at the time as chairman, Council of Chairmen. Continuing, Amaechi said: “Nyesom Wike is nobody in politics. The Commissioner for Information and Commissioner for Education, speak better English than him. What is his political history without the rest God did them through me? He wants to be governor. We are waiting for him. They are spending money and nobody is asking where they are getting the money from.”

He, however, thanked God for sparing the life of Senator Abe from the hands of the police, saying that his survival is a proof of his person.

Hotel selling cooked human meat found in Onitsha 11 arrested with human heads

According to Osun Defender, Onitsha police arrested 11 people after they discovered 2 fresh human heads in a hotel (name withheld) very close to the popular Ose-Okwodu market in Anambra state on Thursday, two AK47 rifles and other weapons were also discovered in the hotel.

The arrest followed tip-offs from area residents on Thursday morning.

The hotel owner, 6 women and 4 men were arrested.

After police got access to the hotel, they made a startling discovery of two human heads wrapped in a cellophane bag, two AK47 rifles, two army caps, 40 rounds of live ammunition and so many cell phones.

“Each time I came to market, because the hotel is very close to the market, I always noticed funny movements in and out of the hotel; dirty people with dirty characters always come into the hotel.

So, I was not surprised when the police made this discovery in the early hours of yesterday,” said a vegetable seller in the area.

A Pastor who was among the people who tipped off the police on Thursday said: “I went to the hotel early this year, after eating, I was told that a lump of meat was being sold at N700, I was surprised.

So I did not know it was human meat that I ate at such expensive price.”

IBB WRITES AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT GOODLUCK

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida today released a statement through his media aide, Kassim Afegbua more or less advising the President to see things a bit differently especially beyond what his aides tell him.

The statement reads: “The happenings in the country in recent times call for worry if we must be sincere with ourselves. Every day, the nation is treated with one form of political issue or the other. From security challenges to economic challenges, Nigerians are asking several questions that deserve responses from government at the various levels. Democracy is when it is a people-driven government with its fundamental principles of freedom of expression, freedom of association, rule of law, accountability, probity and equal representation amongst others.
“I will like to advise President Goodluck Jonathan to tread cautiously so that those sycophants in, and out of government will not derail his focus, resilience and perseverance. He needs all the comportment, resilience, perseverance, introspection and determination to be able to take the right decisions for the good of the country. The arrest and release of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai is a deliberate distraction which the President must run away from.
“He must avoid gambling with decisions and he must be willing to seek a third opinion on issues before he takes his decision. President Goodluck Jonathan must understand that there is a whole body of people out there who are not happy with happenings in the country. It is his responsibility as President of the country to reach out to them and make his mission understandable to the common man on the street so that they can buy into his government.
“If his body of advisers do not understand the temperament in the country and decide to embark on arresting and releasing people on very questionable allegations, they will be making enemies for the President instead of friends. The prerogative is that of the President and no one else.
“President Jonathan should as a matter of responsibility listens to voices of the opposition and or dissent, as he stands to gain experience and knowledge from their well-informed criticisms rather than build hostilities around them. He has to ensure that he minimizes and maximizes his discretionary powers in a manner that will not be subject of abuse.
“President Goodluck Jonathan must sit back, collect himself and carry out a critical self-appraisal before he takes his decisions. He is aware without mention, that the country is presently faced with several developmental challenges.
“Also, security agencies must avoid getting involved in political issues. Modern day security has evolved to a point where you do not require seeing gun-wielding Policemen on the streets. The ability to collate information and analyse same in a proactive manner will help improve the security situation in the country. We must carry out moral healing as well as political healing in the land.
“The President must make it a point of duty to reach out to people, groups and individuals with the sole purpose of selling his presidency. It is becoming instructive that the concept of winner-takes-all which has pervaded the system for so long may not flourish as such again.”

LASU Closed Indefinitely over Students' Protest

Authorities of the Lagos State University (LASU) Thursday ordered the indefinite closure of the institution  following a violent protest by students over the registration process for the rain semester examination.
The students had gone on the rampage over the inability of many of them to access the school portal to register for the examination.
Their counterparts at the Federal University, Otueke, President Goodluck Jonathan's hometown in Bayelsa State, also rioted over alleged hike in school fees.

A statement by LASU, announcing the closure of the school, read:  “In the wake of the violent protest by some affected students of Lagos State University (LASU) over the closure of the university portal for registration of courses for rain semester 2012/2013 examination, the university management has decided to shut down the university indefinitely. Also, examinations have been put off till further notice.
"With this decision, students are expected to vacate the university premises until further notice.”
The  students had begun the protest on Wednesday over the closure of the portal but it turned violent yesterday as they were alleged to have stoned the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Obafunwa.
It was learnt that the students were required to register online to sit for the examination but only 708 students were able to do so, leaving out about 1,292 others.

According to sources, the VC had angered the students when during a visit by officials of the student union government  to plead for an extension of time for registration, he reportedly  told them that those yet to register were insignificant and would automatically have to carry the session over.
This sparked a protest that later turned violent.

However, in the wake of the protest, the Lagos State House of Assembly has summoned the Chairman of LASU  Governing Council, Mr. Bode Agusto, and Obafunwa to appear before it today.
The assembly, at a session yesterday presided over by the Speaker, Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, also summoned Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Yinka Oladunjoye;  Special Adviser on Education, Mr. Fatai Olukoga; five representatives of the students' union and three representatives of the school ruling council.

The assembly took the decision while deliberating on a motion on matters of public importance moved  by the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Wahab Alawiye King.
While LASU students were protesting the inability of many of them to register for examination, their counterparts at the Federal University, Otueke in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, disrupted activities on campus over increase in school fees.
The angry students defied the heavy presence of soldiers on security duty at the presidential guest house, opposite the school, to shut down the institution.

The students barricaded the two roads leading to the Otuoke community and the institution and were said to have locked up principal officers of the school in their offices over the increase in the school fees from N55,000 to N85,000 .
The students lamented that the increase in the   tuition fees was not commensurate with facilities in the school.
But  Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, denied increasing the school fees.
He said the fees were charged according to the three sets of students that had so far gained admissions to the school.

"When the pioneers came in, their fees were N45,000 for tuition and accommodation. By the end of their first year before this second set came in, we increased it to N50,000, but separated the accommodation fees from it. It is for pioneer students and they will pay that until they graduate,"  he added.

‘It didn't hurt when I got it done at the hospital,’ she recounted. ‘But they give you a dilator as part of the healing process, which you have to keep in for extended periods of time to stretch the vaginal opening. It felt like a knife. It was the most painful thing I had ever experienced.’

‘I really associate glamor with being happy. If you put on high heels and lipstick or get a new outfit, you feel great’.

SSS summons Elrufai over provocative statement

The former FCT Minister and Deputy National Secretary, All Progressives Congress, APC, was said to have been invited to clarify the statement, where he was quoted to have said, “The next election is likely to be violent and many people are likely going to die. And the only alternative left to get power is to take it by force; this is the reality on the ground”.

The APC chieftain had further warned that the 2015 general elections would be marred by riots and other forms of violence that might lead to loss of lives and property except the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies were ready to organize free and fair elections.

He accused INEC of incompetence, arguing that if it was not able to hold credible elections in Anambra and Delta states, it would be almost impossible to expect free and fair elections from the electoral umpire next year.

He, therefore, on the basis of the above, passed a vote of no confidence in the Attahiru Jega-led electoral commission and security agencies to organise impartial elections in 2015 even as he predicted a disastrous outcome if those involved did not get their acts together early enough.

246Nigerianinfo learnt that the former minister’s comments did not go down well with the SSS, which necessitated the invitation and also the issuance of a terse statement warning politicians against making provocative and disruptive comments ahead of the general elections.

The second coming of Jesus is a doctrine every muslim must believe, says Imam

The Imam of Federal College of Technology, Yaba Mosque, Imam Saeed Salmon has said that contrary to some belief by Muslims, Islam also subscribes to the widely held Christian belief that Jesus Christ will return in what has been described as his ‘second coming’, emphasising that any Muslim, who does not believe in it, is not a true follower of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Salmon, who spoke at a special lecture held at the Lagos Central Mosque, Tinubu, said Jesus is a messenger of God and would still return to a mosque in Damascus.

“The second coming of Jesus Christ is a doctrine that every Muslim must believe. The teachings of Prophet Muhammad talks extensively about this.

“The Qua’ ran Chapter 4:157-159 teaches this but the teachings of Islam does not support that Jesus was killed or resurrected, rather, he was raised by Almighty Allah to his majesty.

“Jesus is coming again to refute the claim of the Jews that he was crucified and to correct the doctrine of the Christians that he is the son of God.

“Again, the second coming of Jesus is to establish that there is a close relationship between Prophet Muhammad and Jesus himself”, he said.

The Chief host and organiser of the lecture, Amir Ajala Kamardeen, noted that he is under obligation as a true adherent of Islam, to educate the public and to correct any misconception about the religion.

“Jesus is a prophet and messenger of Allah and as a true Muslim, we are bound to believe all prophets of Allah.

“The holy book ,Qur’an points to the fact that the second coming of Jesus Christ is a sign of end time but there are some group of Muslims in Harvard University and in Cairo known as the fatimists and also Ahmadists who are saying otherwise, so, I have put it upon myself to correct them”, Amir Kamardeen added.

Lekki-Ikoyi Toll Gate: Court Adjourns Suit To Feb. 7

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has fixed February 7 for hearing in a suit against the Lagos State Government, over collection of tolls on the newly constructed Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge.

The suit which was slated for parties to file written addresses was adjourned, as the Presiding Judge, Justice Saliu Saidu, was said to on be on official assignment.

Lagos based lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Mr Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, had filed the suit, challenging the collection of tolls on the bridge, arguing that the bridge was erected on a federal navigable waterway.

Adegboruwa had filed the suit on November 26, 2012, seeking an order of injunction, restraining the Lagos Government from collecting any toll or tax in any form whatsoever, from motorists on the bridge.

While seeking the court’s resolve as to whether there exists any law in Nigeria, that authorises the collection of such tolls, tax or fee, from citizens, he also wants  the court to declare that the imposition of such a tariff on road users, is an illegal form of taxation and is inconsistent with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Attorney-General of the Federation, and the National Inland Waterways Authority, also joined as first and second respondents in the suit.

The Attorney-General of Lagos State, Adeola Ipaye, and the Lagos State Government, are third and fourth respondents.

Houston mayor weds lesbian partner of 23 years in California

Houston Mayor Annise Parker has married longtime partner Kathy Hubbard in a sunset ceremony Thursday at a private residence in Palm Springs, Calif., Parker’s office announced.
A small group of family and friends, including Parker’s mother and Hubbard’s sister, attended the service.
The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Paul Fromberg, rector of St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church in San Francisco. The couple chose Thursday as their wedding date because it was the 23rd anniversary of the beginning of their relationship.
“This is a very happy day for us,” Parker said in her statement. “We have had to wait a very long time to formalize our commitment to each other. Kathy has been by my side for more than two decades, helping to raise a family, nurture my political career and all of the other ups and downs and life events that come with a committed relationship. She is the love of my life, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life married to her.”
Fromberg is a gay priest who had been rector of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Houston before leaving for San Francisco.
Parker’s election in 2009 made Houston the largest U.S. city with an openly gay mayor. While California allows gay people to marry, Texas does not recognize same-sex marriages.
According to the mayor’s statement, Hubbard will avail herself of other insurance options “and will, therefore, not participate in the new policy granting city health insurance benefits to spouses of legally married city.

Resignation: I’ve No Ill-Feelings Towards Tukur, Says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has no personal animosity against the former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur.

The Media Assistant to the former president, Mr Tunde Oladunjoye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Obasanjo had no grudge against Tukur.

“I want you to note that Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has nothing personal against Alhaji Bamanga Tukur”, he said.

Oladunjoye who made a reference to Obasanjo’s recent letter to Tukur said that the former president did not call for Tukur’s resignation.

He said that the issues raised in the letter were purely based on personal principle.

“If you look at Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s last letter to the former national chairman, the issues he raised in that letter were much more than Tukur’s resignation”, he said.

Oladunjoye, however, said that the issues raised in Obasanjo’s letter were yet to be addressed.

Obasanjo had written a letter dated Jan. 7 to Tukur in which he announced his withdrawal from activities of the party at local, state, zonal and national levels.

Obasanjo hinged his reason on the fact that the party had been negating the principles of morality, decency and discipline in its decisions, particularly as it affected the South-West zone.

According to Obasanjo, I also believe that on no account should a known habitual criminal that is wanted abroad to face criminal charges leveled against him should be extolled as a political leader.

No Evidence N8.5tn ‘Missing’ Oil Funds Was Paid Into The Federation Account – NGF

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) led by governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi on Thursday called on the National Assembly to engage a credible foreign firm to carry out a comprehensive independent forensic audit of the alleged missing $49.8 billion (N8.5 trillion) from the Federation Account.

Their call for a probe into the purportedly missing sum, which represents about 76 per cent of the value of crude oil lifting between 2012 and July 2013, according to the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Lamido Sanusi Lamido, comes on the backdrop of the inability of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Federal Ministry of Finance, Petroleum Ministry, Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, and CBN to reconcile the books as $10.8 billion is still yet to be properly accounted for.

Reading the communiqué of the meeting held in Abuja that ended in the early hours of Thursday, Amaechi noted that declining state revenue being witnessed by the government is not unconnected with such financial diversions.

He said: “We, members of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), at our meeting today, at the Rivers State Governor’s Lodge, Abuja, deliberated on a number of issues and resolved as follows: On the issue of the missing $49.8 billion (N8.5 Trillion) or equivalent of two years of the National Budget, there is no evidence that this amount was paid into the Federation Account or duly appropriated.

“We accordingly call on the National Assembly to institute a comprehensive independent forensic audit by an international reputable firm. We fear that the recent decline of State Revenues is not unconnected with the financial diversion”.

The Forum also maintained that the Federal Government is in breach of the Fiscal Responsibility Act by failing to consult with states before forwarding the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) to the National Assembly.

It also noted that the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting has not held in the last four months.

Amaechi said: “In clear breach of the provision of Section 11, Part II of the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2007 which requires the Federal Government to hold consultations with states before the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) is laid before the National Assembly; consultation with states on the MTEF and Fiscal Strategy Paper (2014-2016) did not hold.

“The National Economic Council (NEC) meeting where issues of this nature would have been discussed last held four months ago”.

The Forum also decried the recent violent attacks and killings that took place in Borno State and the attack on the father of Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State.

On attacks in River State, the Forum said: “We also condemn the flagrant violation of the rights of citizens to freely assemble in Rivers State by the Nigerian Police; the excessive use of force against unarmed citizens in the exercise of their fundamental rights and the shooting of Senator Magnus Abe.

“The financial irregularities relating to public accounting, the lack of compliance with the Fiscal Responsibility Act, 2007, and the recent security breaches are not unconnected with the refusal of the Federal Government to convene meetings of statutory institutions created in the Constitution such as the National Economic Council (NEC), the Council of State, the Nigeria Police Council and meetings of the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). We urge a return to the path of constitutionalism”.

Okonjo-Iweala replies Reps: we’ve created 1.6m jobs

Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala cleared the way yesterday for lawmakers to work on the budget. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala answered the 50 questions asked by the House of Representatives – a pre-condition to examine the 2014 budget.

The minister, in a statement by her Special Adviser, Paul C. Nwachukwu, said 1.6 million jobs were created by the government last year – according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

She said 250,000 jobs were created in the agric sector in the 10 Northern states through provision of inputs, adding that the manufacturing, through the Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone, created an estimated 30,000 direct and indirect jobs.

She said the government’s special intervention programme YouWin supported young entrepreneurs, creating over 18,000 jobs as well as the Sure-community Services, which added 120,000 job opportunities.

The Minister said despite noticeable challenges, the economy is showing real and measurable progress in many areas, adding that this could be seen in the fact that more jobs were being created; roads, rail and other infrastructure were being improved, and that the country was saving for the future and planning better for the present.

She cited the improvement in federal highways, which she affirmed had been confirmed by many Nigerians who travelled during the Christmas and New Year holidays, as clear evidence that much has been achieved. She listed key highways which have witnessed significant progress to include the Kano-Maiduguri road, the Abuja-Lokoja road, the Apapa-Oshodi road, the Onitsha-Enugu-Port-Harcourt road and the Benin-Ore-Shagamu road, adding that preliminary work had begun on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the Second Niger Bridge.

Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said the Railway Modernisation Programme involving the construction of standard gauge lines was underway, stressing that the 1,124 km Western line linking Lagos and Kano is now functional. Work on the Eastern line linking Port Harcourt to Maiduguri is about 36 per cent complete. “The Abuja-Kaduna Standard Gauge line has attained 68 per cent completion while the Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri Line, which is presently 77 per cent completed, will be completed next year,” she added.

On the insinuations by the House Committee on Media that the country was piling up debts under the Minister’s purview as Finance Minister, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said: “ There is no substance to the charge. In fact, the opposite is true.”

“Under the leadership of President Jonathan and working with the Debt Management Office and the Budget Office of the Federation, the Minister followed through with a robust approach which includes progressive reduction of borrowing, quick settlement of due debts and the retirement of N75 billion of maturing bonds via a Sinking Fund dedicated to paying off substantial bonds. These measures have produced clear results as shown in the reduction of borrowing from N852 billion in 2011 to N571.9 billion this year,” Nwachukwu said in the statement.

Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala, in her response which spanned 100 pages, touched on job creation, infrastructure, inland waterways, water resources, aviation, power and manufacturing. It also includes agriculture, health, education and communications technology.

On Inland Waterway, she said: “We have dredged about 72 km of the lower River Niger from Baro in Niger State to Warri in Delta State; and completed the construction of the Onitsha inland port; while the Baro port is nearing completion. The result of all these is that we now have year round navigation around the lower Niger; and we are already witnessing an increase in cargo volume from below 2.9 million metric tons in 2011 to over 5 million metric tons on the inland waterways. As in the case of the rail transport, the number of passengers travelling via our inland waterways has increased fourfold from 250,000 in 2011 to over 1.3 million.”

With respect to Aviation, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said: “The 22 airports across Nigeria are being remodelled and upgraded. We completed the upgrade of 11 airport terminals and work on the remaining 11 terminals is in progress.”

She said the Enugu Airport is operational as an international airport with a new terminal under construction. “We have also commenced work on the construction of three new international airport terminals: in Lagos, in Kano, and in Abuja.”

She said modern navigational and meteorological systems were installed at our airports to improve air safety. In addition, six airports namely: Jos, Markurdi, Yola, Jalingo, Lagos and Ilorin, which are strategically located in proximity to food baskets, have been designated as perishable cargo airports and international standards perishable cargo facilities are being developed at these airports. A new Cargo Development Division has been established by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to give focus to this effort.

Replying to the question on power, she said the government had completed one of the most comprehensive and ambitious power sector privatisation and liberation programmes globally. “We have privatised four power generation companies and 10 power distribution companies, and have virtually settled all claims and entitlements of PHCN workers. Some major cities got an average of 16-18 hours of electricity per day in 2013,” she stated, adding however that power dropped in November and December during the transition.

She said in 2013, the government mobilised $1.5 billion in financing from multilateral sources for investment and upgrade of the transmission network in 2014 and beyond.

To promote clean energy, “we also commenced construction of the 700MW Zungeru Hydro-Power project in 2013. We have strengthened relevant power market intermediaries such as the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET), and backed them with financing to stimulate greater private investments in the sector,” she said.

On the manufacturing sector, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said the government launched the National Industrial Revolution Plan (NIRP), which focuses on industrialising Nigeria and diversifying “our economy into sectors such as agro-processing, light manufacturing, and petrochemicals
