Jonathan receives Queen’s Commonwealth relay baton

President Goodluck Jonathan will today in Abuja receive the Queen’s Commonwealth relay baton to mark the beginning of its official countdown to the 2014 20th Commonwealth Games billed to kick-off in July 23 in Glasgow, Scotland.
The baton, flagged off by the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II last Wednesday at the Buckingham Palace, England, in line with the tradition of the Commonwealth Games is expected to travel round the 71 Commonwealth member nations participating in the Games.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, who made the disclosure while inaugurating the batons committee in Abuja, said that the baton would arrive Abuja from Ghana aboard Arik Airline aircraft.
He added that the LOC and the Commonwealth committee will receive the baton at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport before taking it to the Presidential Villa, where the Sports Minister/chairman of the NSC, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, will hand it over to President Goodluck Jonathan.
Hon. Elegbeleye further revealed that President Jonathan would in turn present it to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Mohammed, for official declaration of the baton’s tour in Nigeria adding that the baton will tour some designated cities in Nigeria for three days before the official hand-over to the Republic of Cameroon on Wednesday.
“The baton, which is the tradition of the Commonwealth Games, having arrived Nigeria today, will engineer us to begin full preparation for the Games.  Nigeria will definitely do well in the games and we hope to improve on our past records,” Elegbeleye assured.
