Kidnappers in Bayelsa State are demanding a N50 million in ransom for the release of Okali Powel, a six-year-old boy.
Okali, a son of a former Commissioner for Local Government in the state, Godknows Powell, was abducted by gunmen on New Year’s Day in Yenagoa, the state capital.
A report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted family sources as saying yesterday that the boy was in the company of his mother and on their way back from the church when the kidnappers accosted them and whisked him away. The abductors subsequently contacted the family and warned against involving security agents in their negotiations.
The victim's father served as commissioner in the administration of Timipre Sylva. He was also the Chairman of Yenagoa Local Government Area during the tenure of Diepreye Alamieyeseigha as governor.
